  • If possible away from direct sunlight.

Drying time:
30 minutes to 1 hour at 23°C.

Note:  Higher temperatures will accelerate the drying times (approximately halved for every 10°C increase), whilst lower temperatures will retard the drying time (approximately doubled for every 10°C decrease).

Recoating time: 4 hours at 23°C.
Requirements: Two coats.

Surface Preparations
New Galvanised Sheeting:

  • Remove fabricators pre-treated oil, oxidation or any other contamination with Prominent Multi Surface Etch Cleaner and abrasive pads.
  • Ensure that a water break-free surface is obtained.
  • Rinse well and allow drying before applying 1 coat Prominent Galvanised Iron Primer.

Weathered Galvanised Sheeting:

  • Loose rust and oxidation must be mechanically removed.
  • Clean with Prominent Multi Surface Etch Cleaner and abrasive pads to a water break-free surface.
  • Rinse well and allow drying before coating with two coats Prominent Rust Primer.

Cement Roof Tiles:

  • Must be cleared of any algae and fungus before painting.
  • High Pressure water wash the surface or alternatively scrub down with wire brush and running water to remove powdery or chalky surfaces.
  • Allow to dry.
  • Apply 1 coat Prominent Surface Restorer or Prominent Trade Bonding Liquid.

Fibre Cement:

  • Prepare and prime with Prominent Dampcure as per technical data sheet.

Cement (wood floated):

  • Chemically etch with Spirits of Salt diluted 1:10 with water OR with Pool Acid diluted 1:20 with water solution until well etched and free of efflorescence – rinse thoroughly with water under pressure.
  • Allow drying.

Cement Imprint Paving:

  • High pressure water jet cleaning.
  • Allow to dry.
  • Apply 1 coat Prominent Surface Restorer.

Cement Pavers:

  • High pressure water jet cleaning.
  • Allow to dry.
  • Apply 1 coat Prominent Surface Restorer.

Redecorating:
It is advisable to test the compatibility of coatings when redecorating is involved, i.e. paint a small section and then check the adhesion after 48 hours by applying a strip of masking tape and attempting to rip the paint off.

Galvanised - Acrylic based, Sound:

  • Clean with high-pressure water jet at 180 Bar and rotating nozzle to remove chalkiness and loose flaking paint and/or clean with wire brush, scraping and sanding.
  • Areas showing red rust should be abraded back to bare metal.
  • Wash down with Prominent Multi Surface Etch Cleaner and an abrasive pad and rinse thoroughly with high pressure water.
  • Allow to dry.
  • Prime exposed sheeting with 2 coats Prominent Rust Primer.

Galvanised - Poor Condition:

  • Remove all paint and treat as new weathered galvanised Sheeting under New Work.

Cement Tile - Acrylic based, Sound:

  • Clean with high pressure water jet at 180 Bar and rotating nozzle to remove chalkiness and loose flaking paint and/or clean with wire brush, scraping and sanding.
  • Allow to dry.
  • Prime exposed unpainted cement tiles with Prominent Surface Restorer or Prominent Trade Bonding Liquid and allow drying.

Cement Tile - Poor Condition:

  • Remove all paint and treat as per cement roof tiles under New Work.

Alkyd and Enamel Roof Paint:

  • Clean with high pressure water jet at 180 Bar and rotating nozzle to remove chalkiness and loose flaking paint and/or clean with wire brush, scraping and sanding.
  • Areas showing red rust need to be abraded back to bare metal.
  • Wash down with Prominent Multi Surface Etch Cleaner and an abrasive pad and rinse thoroughly with high pressure water.
  • Allow to dry.
  • Prime exposed sheeting with 2 coats Prominent Rust Primer.

Bitumen Aluminium/Aluminium:

  • Not recommended.

Micaceous Iron Oxide:

  • Remove all loose material and do a masking tape test before proceeding.

N.B Friable and powdery surfaces require special attention before painting. If in doubt to the correct preparation contact Prominent Technical Department. In all cases first perform a masking tape test before painting to ensure a sound surface is achieved before painting.

Limitations

  • Prominent Select Roof and Paving only carries a 7 years life expectancy when used on roofs.
  • Prominent Select Roof and Paving can only be applied to specified substrates and under the recommended conditions.
  • Adhesion to highly polished cement and gloss enamel floor paints is not good enough to ensure durability.
  • Cannot be applied to wet or damp surfaces or in conditions other than specified, or if rainfall or dew is imminent.
  • Weathering takes place over time. Brighter colours tend to weather more.
  • Metal roofs must not be exposed to rain within 24 hours after application.
  • To ensure colour consistency of the applied roof coating, check that the batch numbers are the same on all containers. Where batch numbers differ, intermix before use.
  • Not recommended for application to surfaces coated with Bituminous Aluminium or Aluminium paint.
  • Do not apply to surfaces where the temperature is less than 10°C.
  • Could be slippery on steep inclines and when wet and prone to marking with tyres.
  • Prominent Select Roof and Paving is not designed for the purpose of collecting rain water off painted roofs for drinking purposes. It is therefore essential for customers who collect rain water from painted roofs for drinking purposes to follow stringent guidelines. For more information on these guidelines contact Prominent Paints Technical Department on 0861 776 646 or 011 389 4746.
